Teacher, Freelancer

Tessenderlo, Belgium

I am passionate developer turned teacher. I spend my time helping the new generation of IT professionals find their way in the wonderful world of web design and development. My years as consultant help me guide my students towards a bright future, with all the knowledge and the right mindset to get started as full-stack developers.

Apart from teaching, I use the skills I learned in consultancy to make websites, applications, computers or help out with home IT under the name JB Solutions. This gives me a chance to help out the local community with their needs as well as keep up to date with the newest and most popular tech.

Career outline

... - 2011

Early days

In the early days, my career path was not very clear to me. Due to this, I tried a couple of educations but stuck with none of them. My true passion was still to be discovered.

2011 - 2014

Logistics

After dropping out of school, I started working in logistics. I did a lot of interim jobs in this time period for a lot of different companies such as: Toyota, Nike, BLACK+DECKER, Val d'hony, ...

Most of these jobs, I was working as order picker and reach truck driver.

2014 - 2017

Back to school

Working in logistics was not a life goal. So while I was doing that, I was also trying to find my passion in life. I didn't really have to look far because when I was not working, I was working on my computer.

The next logical step was an education in applied computer sciences. And so started my three year journey at Thomas More college in Geel, Belgium and a semester abroad in Trollhättan, Sweden.

2016 - 2017

Student job

While studying, I was determined not to take a job in logistics during the summer but rather put my new knowledge to the test and take an IT related student job.

This landed me at Kautex Textron. In my first year here, I updated a cluster of MS Excel files where the quality tests had to be saved to pull reports from.

The next year, I was welcomed back to Kautex Textron to repeat my work after an update ruined the cluster. However, with a lot more knowledge gained in school, I suggested a redesign in the shape of a PHP web application. My suggestion was accepted and that year, I redesigned the Quality Testing Dashboard.

2017

Internship

As part of my bachelors degree, I had to do an internship. I chose a company named Onlinewerkrooster, now also known as Strobbo. This company specializes in the restaurant and hotel sector and they make an app which lets the client generate working rosters for their personnel, based on their needs and automatically connect to governmental instances to always be on time with their paperwork.

During my time there, I expanded their app to make it possible for a client to register and manage multiple venues and even schedule personnel between those. This work lead to the signing of multiple big and international clients.

2017 - 2022

Consultancy

After graduating, and a well-deserved vacation, I started out at Realdolmen, a consultancy company.

The first three months consisted of an extremely thorough and fast paced learning track to get you ready to be sent to clients. I landed my first client immediately after these three months and would be stationed there for the next five years.

The client were I was stationed was SCK CEN, the Belgian Nuclear Research Facility. During my time there, I expanded, remade old and deprecated, and made new applications.

2022 - ...

Teaching

After five years at SCK CEN, I was let go due to restructuring and I dreaded going back to Brussels. Being a teacher was always something I wanted to end up doing so when I saw an opening at Thomas More Geel, where I also got my degree, I took a shot.

Right now, I am a teacher at Thomas More and I am teaching the new generation of IT professionals how to code. The feeling of passing down your passion is one of a kind.
